Google Analytics: How the heck to you use it?

I have Google analytics on this site, but it took some doing to understand some of the reports. I'm sure I still have something to learn. I just wanted to start with the basics here today.

Lets look at a couple of sections today.

Search Engine Keywords - are the words that drew them to your site. They are clicking on those to read you content.

Referring Sites - those are other sites that have links to your site, and content within your site.

Visitor type - What number of your visitors are NEW, and what number are returning to read your content!

These are important starting points to understanding analytics. One thing that is nice is you don't have to have that counter on the bottom of your page any longer! There is not need for it anymore.

Visits: Number of times somebody came to your site in the week.

Pages/Visit: Measures number of pages read on average to show you how "engaged" your readers are with your content.

Avg. Time on Site: Measures the length of the typical visit to your site. In general, the higher quality your content is, the longer the average visit.

% New Visits: This one is a little confusing. Basically, measures what percent of visits are made by visitors who have never been to your site before. In general, you want to see this number drop as more and more visitors return to your site because they are enjoying your thoughts, concepts and information you provide.

Bounce Rate: NOT what I thought it was! Bounce Rate is the percentage of visits to your site that result in only one page being visited. For most types of sites the lower bounce rates are better.

Here are some basics for you for Google Analytics! Use those reports to realize what content is getting you traffic, what keywords are important for one! Then continue to find ways of writing content that people will enjoy reading, and content that sells YOU and your product!

What has anyone else learned about this program that you use for your site?

Find your NICHE on the internet!

I read a lesson today on NICHE marketing basically on the internet! Lets take my industry - Engraving. Lets just say the chance of me getting to the top 10 on the internet JUST because of Trophies isn't very likely! I mean engravers or trophy house are plentiful aren't they? I can't say that I'm someone in the middle of quality, because I don't think I am! We do a good job, but how many times are people willing to go do page 30 of the internet to find me? People on the internet AREN'T very patience! I know I'm not either at times! LOL! Its the same thing when you hear about people that sell baskets, children's clothing, jewelry for example!

I decided I was going to take this free SEO course that I found online. SEO Training by GNC Web Creations is the name of it, and its all yahoo group based. It has lessons that you do to learn. I may not be able to apply EVERYTHING to my free website, but it will give me a good idea of what I need when purchase of webspace comes into the picture!

As you can guess the lesson today was about finding your NICHE! One of the teacher's examples was she does web design, and made a point of letting every one know just HOW MANY web designers there are! She targets (for one thing) motorcyles websites!

She mentions that every page within your website is a door to people. My example may not be as DYNAMIC, but I will give a try! One page on my site may be dedicated to SOCCER TROPHIES, and another page BASEBALL TROPHIES. If I have one page with all themes one page chances are good no one is going to stick around searching pass the cheerleader trophy, science club trophy, football trophy to get their SOCCER trophy! She hasn't said it yet, but I would assume you are to optimatize each page per theme! It doesn't matter if your customer comes to your site on page 2000 if that is where their product is!

Does this mean you leave out all those OTHER products that you sell? Nope! Just focus on the 'special' or 'niche' trophy in my case! It may not even be TROPHIES for me. I will have to see!

She had a good article on her site!

Neat Tip for Using Google as your Calulator

Use google as your handy dandy calulator. When my desk is buried, and I can't find it - type it in and get your answer! All you have to do is enter your equation or formula into the standard Google search box, and then click the Google Search button. The result of the calculation is displayed on the search results page; it’s that simple.

You can use the standard algebraic operators to construct your calculations—+, -, x, and / for addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division, accordingly. For example, to add 4 plus 2, enter 4 + 2 and press Enter. To divide 12 by 3, enter 12 / 3, and so on.

And Google’s calculator isn’t limited to basic addition and multiplication. It can also handle more advanced calculations, trigonometric functions, inverse trigonometric functions, hyperbolic functions, and logarithmic functions. Just enter the proper formula into the search box, and wait for Google to display the answer.

Its just to know even for my kids homework help (when I can't even remember how to do it!). I won't tell them this just yet!

In addition to performing calculations, Google also knows a variety of mathematical and scientific constants, such as pi, Avogadro’s Number, and Planck’s Constant. It also knows the radius of the Earth, the mass of the sun, the speed of light, the gravitational constant, and a lot more.

For example, if you’re not sure what the value of pi is, just enter pi into the Search box and press Enter; Google returns 3.14159265, as it should. How about the speed of light? Enter speed of light, and Google returns 299,792,458 m/s. It’s amazing what Google knows.

The search engines are getting better and better aren't they? LOL At least some in areas!

GooglePages are FUN! You have one yet?

Here is the "about" page for Google Pages

Google page basically allows you to make a couple of webpages for yourself. You do have some access to the html, so you can dress them up a bit! One requirement is to get the gmail (basically google's email program) in order to do this. I personally didn't think it was all that big of deal! You can still use your own email and passcode to sign into your google account. My sign in name is the one I choose for gmail so don't let it take you back when you see it after you sign in! It wont' show your email name that you opened your google account with anymore.

The more items you use OFF this program the more webspace you can use! For example, I still use photobucket for my images. My account as of now still has tons of space left! The help section seems to be pretty active, and if you do a search for what you are looking for chances are you will find it!

I was reading the help section, and I came upon a poster that had his own googlepage with tips! I went there and did some fast reading. I learned that you can use templates from other places, and NOT use the ones avaiable! That is all fine and great except you have to break the template UP and place in the separate sections of their TEMPLATE! I found that out the hard way! When you start playing around with it you see the button to edit the html, and so of course I did! I erased all the html that was there, and then copied my template html that I worked on instead. What I didn't realize is that I placed my entire template within the header portion of the page, and it looked AWFUL! You have to break up your template into the separate sections.

The preview section isn't all that helpful! I found you must view it live in order to get a good feel for what it will look like live! YES you can play around with it without it being LIVE on the internet, and if you decide to take it down off the internet it gives you that option also!

My page is still a work in progress! Here is is!

Engraver For You

Now you can't add meta tags or keywords into your html from what I have read. You must make sure your page is keyword rich, and do this naturally! Then make sure you get some of those one way links to drive up the page rank of your site!

Helpful tip page from another google page member

What I would LIKE to do is use this page for an entrance into my ecrater store! I placed a note on my google page noting that if they click the 'baseball' button for example it will take them to the baseball trophy section of my store! I will be adding additional sports trophies, and pages with time. Remember to use your anchor text along with other items!

5. Sign up for a free account at BlogExplosion.com and register your blog there: http://www.blogexplosion.com/

6. Submit your blog to all of the directores listed at http://www.rss-feeds-directory.com/blog_lists.html

7. Sign up for a "My Yahoo" at http://my.yahoo.com/ and attach your blog to your own "My Yahoo" account. This will get your blog included in Yahoo very quickly. This is worth the effort to stop what you're doing right and do it, since Yahoo has a PR 9.

8. Use this code: "http://add.my.yahoo.com/content?url= http://www.yourblog.com/urblog.xml" in your blog to allow others to put your feed on their own "My Yahoo" account.

9. Sign up for a "My MSN" at http://www.my.msn.com/, and attach your blog to your own "My MSN" account. This will get your blog included in MSN very quickly. This is also invaluable because MSN has a PR 8.

http://ezinearticles.com/
http://goarticles.com/
http://www.knowledge-finder.com/
http://www.informit.com/articles/

15. Locate blogs with a lot of traffic and place useful comments in their comment box. Be sure the blog and your comments are relavent to both your blog and theirs. Senseless posts won't help you, they'll hurt you.

16. Once you get around 5 to 10 posts on your blog, start a PR campaign and announce it to all relevant channels.

17. Make a blog post as often as possible. More than once a day is not really necessary. Remember, if you can't write that much, go to step # 14.

Logo's and their importance!

Seth's blog has an article about Logo's that I felt was very worth the read!

People get so caught up in the logo process at times, and they forget at first that logo isn't going to do much for them! I'm not saying you shouldn't do a good job in making one! Of course that is important, but don't waste a lot of money and NOT follow up with your customer service etc to make it WORTH something!

The logo will be worth something once you branded the company well enough! They used the example of a well-known company that has a picture of an apple with a bite taken out of it! You can imagine how well that logo would be recognized (and worth the price they paid for it) if their computers were not worth turning ON in the first place!

We had a local chamber here that was rather large! They made the decision one year to change their image around, and go for a new look. NOW that isn't a bad idea all the time! The problem with the organization was it didn't need a new LOOK it needed to restructure certain areas of their organization to attract some untapped markets! They were more geared towards BIG BUSINESS, and they were missing the boat on the small businesses in the area. Their goal was to attract them with their new look. They paid $6000 I think it was for this NEW look, but it didn't attract what they were aiming for! Why? Their logo had nothing to do with WHAT they could do for the small businesses in that area! Their attitude and services that they could provide for those small businesses just wasn't there! I'm sure at first they got their memberships, but the true test is renewal which they failed at. Each year they are constantly on the run to make the up difference, and couldn’t figure out WHY retention is so hard! Was their $6000 investment worth it? The logo may have been if they took the time to work on things.

Logo’s don’t bring in loyal customers – service and good product does!

Placing your own images on Squidoo

There is an option to upload on squidoo, but you have more control over your images when you use a little html.

Above the code for today!

Anyway, the first thing you need is a place to host your pictures for you to use on squidoo! I personally have been using www.photobucket.com for years! Once you place your images on your photobucket account (or whom every you use to host your images) we can go on to the next step!

these are your options with photobucket, and for this example we are going to use the top choice or URL link! Replace the website information that is given in the code I showed on top with this code that you grabbed from your photobucket account. Right now you are READY! You have now written for your html coded picture ready to use on squidoo!

The code above allows you to hyperlink your picture directly to the site it refers to!

If you click on the above picture it will take you directly to my squidoo page for the hat shaped name badges! The above code will allow you to do the same things with your items! As you may have figured out already, the top set of quotes is for the website you want them to go to, and the second set of quotes is the photobucket URL link for your picture! Pretty cool huh?

I'm going to show another picture with directions this time. Just I just grabbed a screen shot with directions! This is how you wrap text around your picture in squidoo!

Squidoo and the email link!

If you wish to include a link so your vistors in squidoo can email you that is very simple! YES we are talking basic HTML again! The last example was pretty simple, and this one will be also!

Again try to use some anchor text instead of EMAIL ME!
Take out your notepad program again, and don't use the word processor! In the first section between the quotes ("") you have some text that states mailto: leave that part alone, and delete the rest of it! Place your own email address in that blank!

Again between the >< place the text you wish to see highlighted in your module over at squidoo!

My Email Contact is what it will look like! AND YOUR DONE!

Basic html on squidoo is a really neat idea to personalize your modules, and make them something people will want to return to!

Squidoo and the hyperlink!

I have been extremely busy lately, but I finally had the time to do two Squidoo lens for the store online! Within 5 minutes of posting the first one I had 7 visits and a rating of 5.

Now it would seem to me that the more relevant tags you use (and if you think about its really KEYWORDS) the more success you might have for traffic! Its really strange to start so low, and watch the numbers grow day by day! Don't forget to use the keyword tools I placed on the sidebar to make sure you use something that the search engines like!
What is NICE about squidoo is that you are able to use html. Now don't get excited because basic html really isn't all that hard to learn! When you find little pieces of code save them in the notepad program and not your word processor.

You can use HTML in the modules that they supply. From what I have figured out - all of them! The first module has the html editor in there, and that did confused me because the rest of them didn't! For visual purposes make sure you click 'wrap text' for that module that offers the html editor. I added the code directly into the other modules. Here are some basic html codes for you.

We are going to start by making a hyperlink. That means you click on some words and it ZOOMS you to that website! Below is the code:

When making a hyperlink to a website don't forget to use that ANCHOR text! Don't use 'click here' for my site! Remember your tagline for your website, blog, store etc and use that! For this example I will use the title of my lens. Above is a snippet of code to paste into your note pad program! Then I will explain it!

Now you see the website in the first part between the quotes (“ “)? That is your first section! The easiest way at first is to actually GO to the website you want to hyperlink, and look to the address bar! Highlight that address (the whole thing) with your mouse and copy it. You can do that a couple of ways.

1. Right click and hit copy
2. Look to the very TOP of the screen and click Edit and click the copy command
3. Click your control button or CTRL button and then hit the C button.

Next go into that code above and delete the domain dot com part (the whole thing), and just leave the quotes. With then paste your website address in there!

1. Right click and hit paste
2. Edit again and then click paste
3. Control (CTRL) and V

Now wasn’t that easy? YEP and you are halfway there!
The second part isn’t that hard either! In between the >< where is says my website – delete that and USE your anchor text! Below is a hyperlink right to the page I mentioned before! I will get you another basic lesson tomorrow!

Below is an example that I used with the squidoo link to my page that I am talking about the badge in the description below!

Name Tag or Name Badge Full Color and Tooth Shaped Dentist

Guaranteed Linkbacks - Here is HOW!

As we have spoken about before linkbacks can help you in your quest for search engine rankings, technorati, and also traffic to your site!

Courtneytuttle.com has a neat list on his site called, "D-list". This list is some blogs that have added some special HTML that states their blog will follow you automatically when you leave a comment on their blog - or linkback to you. If you use this service - or actually major favor - they don't want some crazy comments, spam, etc. I would assume just like any other blog they will delete the comment! They are truly looking for GOOD comments to keep the dialog going! Just like you would wish for your own site!

Right now the site has a list of over 170 blogs to choosee from. If you read a couple that seriously don't do anything for you don't worry about it! The list has quite a selection to choose from! Not only do you get a cool linkback, but you might learn something. You might even find a site that keeps your interest so you keep coming back, and find new friends!

Pretty cool huh?

Get Better Traffic with Anchor Text!

I guess some people would ask first, "What the heck is anchor text?" GOOD question, and in a short answer is linked text is usually relevant to the landing page. The objective of search engines is to provide highly relevant search results; this is where anchor text helps, as the tendency is, more often than not, to hyperlink words relevant to the landing page.

For example John Chow likes to use "Make Money Online". Do you see how I linked his tag-line to his site? Make Money On-line is the ANCHOR text, and the landing page? HIS website in this example! John Chow speaks a lot about making money on-line so it is relevant to the anchor text, and it also helps his ranking when others use this to link to his site! Matter of fact he ASKS you to do it that way!

I read a while back CLICK HERE is used a lot in sites that offer their readers the link to Adobe for their program to read their articles in .pdf. In the search engines if you check to see WHO has the highest ranking for the words "CLICK HERE" it would be THEM! Click here has nothing to DO with their software at all, but something tells me they don't mind the ranking they get for using it! On the funny side its a good example of something NOT relevant if you think about it!

Use your keyword tools to come with up a tagline that would be revelant, and something people actually SEARCH for! I was thinking about "build a store online", but it doesn't seem to popular! I will have to brainstorm, and come up with something SOON!

Remember if your sites name is jackflash.com it may not be all that relevant to what your SITE is about! Remember that search engines also don't like those anchor text being to long. Keep it short and simple! "jackflash.com home of the really fast photo developing" is WAY to long for a search engine to even bother with you! SHORT and SWEET!

Keep something else in mind as well! If you are signing up with a directories, webring, etc and they give you the opportunity to give that tag line instead of your website USE IT! That is also Anchor text!

Blog about money online has an excellent article to continue your reading on the subject now that you have the basics!

Now get that anchor text, and drive that TRAFFIC home!

USPS rates effecting EVERYTHING! How to understand them.

The first couple of days I read the USPS site for information on the postage. Some of my items that I sell I do use USPS, and I was really gritting my teeth to find out HOW much more it was going to cost! The USPS site was confusing more than helpful to me personally.

Once again I did my search on the Internet to see if I could find some information that was a bit clearer as to all these changes. I knew they were going to base some of the items off size, weight and zone. I HOPE this means more effective service! I know for our area delivery can be terrible at times! We have gone months having our mail lost, delivered wrong, etc. Never received bills, bank statements and the rest! Okay. Okay. We won't go there!

We will start with the first class strategy to see if this makes any sense to everyone!
First off GONE are the days of the flat 2 oz mailing with the price being the same, and size didn’t matter. There are size considerations now. You have three categories to choose from: Letter, Flat and Parcel.

We will use the above as our example!

The weight limit for a letter is now 3.5 oz, and if you above that you need to check the two other options to see WHICH is better to suit your needs! Size is also a consideration for price also!

You have three price structures based on size more than weight. You take that 2 oz package, and depending on HOW you mail it could affect the postage paid to get there!
If you place anything bulky inside your standard envelope now chances are good it will get damaged! The standard envelope is basically for letter type correspondence ONLY! If you need to send something within the envelope you are better off sending it as a FLAT! They are placing them in a machine, and if you have anything in there it would rip open the envelope - could lose your item - or your recipient could get their correspondence in a little plastic bag called "Damaged during processing". This could be even something small like a luggage tag or pen!
Non-machine able isn’t what I thought it was! At first I felt they mean if it had the zip plus 4 and the fancy bar codes, etc that a printer can do when you print your postage online for example. I guess it means anything you can’t place in that processing machine is what is concerned non-machine able. In other words, the example above with the luggage tag or pen inside your envelope? You need to send that flat at the non-machince able price. They can’t place that in their machines! That includes envelopes that have clasps, strings, buttons, etc. Anything that can get stuck in the machine is what I have understood.
The maximum weight for a letter is now 3.5 ounces, and anything above that is considered a flat! Also anything bigger than a standard size envelope (like the #10 envelope) is considered a flat! Thickness is also a factor! If the envelope is over ¼” in height it will be considered a flat as well!

See the below picture for a visual and additional notes!

As you have read the flexiability of a flat is ALSO a factor! See the picture below for a visual as to what that means. If you ship something rigid, and it refuses to bend you will be charged MORE to ship your item!

Priority mail of course still has their boxes available at the flat rate and regular rate! I guess you could say there is a up side to this part!

The flat rate envelopes are $4.60 with a maximum weight of 70 lbs, and you can get free delivery confirmation IF you print your postage online! This price covers within the domestic United states.

They can also be used for international shipping now as well! You are limited to 4 lbs at this point!

Domestic Priority Mail Flat Rate Envelope can be used for international shipping:
— One rate to Canada and Mexico
• $9.00
— One rate to all other countries
• $11.00
— 4 pound maximum
• The dimensions of the envelope are 12 1/2" X 9 1/2".
• The contents of the flat rate envelope must be confined within the envelope, using the flap adhesive as the primary means of closure.
• The flap must close easily, adhere to the envelope and be secured with tape if desired.
• The design and shape of the envelope may not be altered or enlarged in any way to fit the contents.

What about the flat boxes? They have two sizes, and up to 70 lbs within the domestic United States. The price from what I have read is $8.95. I would check with the post office for the weight restrictions for outside the United States, because I couldn’t find it online!

• Domestic Priority Mail Flat Rate Boxes can be used for international shipping:
— One rate to Canada and Mexico
• $23.00
— One rate to all other countries
• $37.00
— 20 pound maximum
• The inside dimensions for the two boxes available are 11" x 8.5" x 5.5" and 13.625" x 11.875" x 3.375".
• The contents of the flat rate box must be neatly contained inside of the box with adhesive packaging tape.
• The box must close securely and retain its shape when taped with adhesive.
• The shape of the box may not be changed or enlarged to fit its contents.

Extra services such as Delivery Confirmation™, Signature Confirmation®, and Insurance are available to use with Priority Mail Flat-Rate Envelopes and Boxes.

Well that is as far as I have got in understanding the new postal system! I hope this helps others! I’m sure I will visit this again as I learn more! This is just the basics from what I understand!
